  • Pro triumvir capitalis petitionem meam annuntians

    M. Didius Vulpes Quiritibus S.P.D.

I hereby announce my candidacy for the office of Triumvir Capitalis for the year MMDCCLXXX a.u.c.

The triumviri capitales are responsible for the moderation our public forums, command the cohortes vigilum, and investigate and prosecute breaches of Nova Roman laws. This must be done with fairness, consistency, and restraint. That is the standard I will bring to the office.

I have been a citizen since MMDCCLXI a.u.c. This year I decided to step forward and serve. I am in the Cohors Vigilum. I am a member of the Collegium Iurisprudentium, where I am pursuing its course of study in Nova Roman law. This month I was appointed scriba of Provincia America Transmississippiana.

Outside Nova Roma, I hold a Master of Science in Management and have worked more than twenty-five years in information technology, ensuring system reliability across wide geographic regions and international borders. In that work I triage problems, document procedures, and resolve issues. I previously served eight years in the United States Naval Reserve and was honorably discharged.

    If elected, I pledge:

    • Consistency. I will provide a clear reason for every moderation action and hold all citizens to the same standard.
    • Documentation. I will work alongside my colleagues to set clear, standardized operating procedures for the vigiles, so the mission never hinges on who occupies the office.
    • Proper limits. I will operate strictly within my statutory authority while maintaining a close, collegial partnership with my fellow triumviri and the aediles.

The triumvirate is often the first step on the cursus honorum. It is where I wish to begin my service to the Res Publica.

I respectfully ask for your vote.

    Valete.

  • Election season

It is election season in Nova Roma. I intend to run, but I was all over the place, mentally, on what I wanted to do. (Of course, just because I want to do it doesn’t mean I will be elected, but why run for an office if I don’t want to do it?)

I have settled on Triumvir Captalis. The is the body that overseas law enforcement for the public spaced—digital included—for Nova Roma. I am already a Vigil Forensis for the Forum Domitii (Discord), and I am a member of the Collegium Iurisprudentium. It seems like a great fit for me.

I sent my declaration as a candidate to Consul D. Aurelius yesterday. I’m waiting for him to verify he has registered it before I make my official public announcement on the Forum Romanum. Today is the Kalends of November, and it seems like a good day to announce. I hope I am able to do so today.

    On Roman Time

Joining Nova Roma has not been a flurry of nonstop action. In many ways, I feel like administration of the organization moves as slowly as things probably did in the height of the Republic. It can take a long time to get a response when you ask for information from an official, or want to straighten something out.

This can be really frustrating to a new or prospective citizen. I know of several new citizens, myself included, who requested citizenship—and even received an acknowledgment of their application and chosen Roman name—but still did not show up in the roster of citizens. Is appearing in this album of names that important in the long run? No, but to the new citizen, it makes it feel like Nova Roma is not responsive, and may not be a “real thing.”

In addition to acting as a moderator on the Discord server and taking part in the collegium iurisprudentium, I started making an effort to reach out to local citizens. I want to foster a feeling of real community, and make real-world activities the norm here. I know a few others across the US are doing the same. I don’t know how things are in other parts of the Republic, but we want to see our provinces become active again.
